To build the most forgiving all-stainless steel set of golf clubs we've ever developed, Callaway Golf engineers set aside conventional thinking, utilized innovative technologies and have redefined the shape of super game-improvement. The new Big Bertha Irons take forgiveness to new heights by integrating a set of clubs featuring the i-brids, clubs designed to replace hard-to-hit long irons. The three i-brids combine the accuracy and control of irons with the forgiveness and versatility of a hybrid and are the most highly playable hybrid-like iron our engineers could make. As an alternative, traditionally shaped long irons are now available as well, featuring increased offset, a larger effective hitting area and a constant width sole for maximum forgiveness all the way through the set. To create the Big Bertha 08 line of irons--the most forgiving all-stainless-steel irons the company has ever developed--Callaway Golf engineers set aside conventional thinking and employed a host of innovative technologies to redefine the look and feel of your game. The Big Bertha 08 line integrates a set of traditional short, mid, and long irons with a trio of i-brid clubs, which combine the accuracy and control of irons with the forgiveness and versatility of a hybrid. The i-brids' low, deep center of gravity (CG) helps get the ball in the air quickly and easily, while the extremely wide sole helps improve turf interaction. The traditionally shaped irons, meanwhile, feature an increased offset, a larger effective hitting area, and a constant-width sole. Add the features together and you have a set of clubs that produces maximum forgiveness and a seamless progression of distances and trajectories, helping your game excel whether you're swinging a 3-iron or a loft wedge.
Big Bertha 08 irons are outfitted with several core technologies, including both relatively new innovations and technologies that have stood the test of time. The clubs' Extreme Notch Weighting, for instance, redistributes weight to the low, rearward area of the club in the toe and heel, creating a high moment of inertia (MOI). This improves your distance and accuracy on mis-hits at the heel and toe, making it easier to approach the green. The clubs also take advantage of VFT Technology, which allows Callaway engineers to lower the center of gravity to produce an optimum trajectory with each iron in the set, giving long irons a higher launch angle and short irons and wedges a better trajectory height. And a crucial improvement comes in the form of the S2H2 design, a patented design that shortens the length of the hosel, allowing the weight to be moved lower and to the more useful perimeter weight of the clubhead. Callaway further improved the design by allowing the shaft tip to extend through the hosel and clubhead to the sole. This bore-through design improves the feel and control of the club by moving the tip of the shaft closer to the center of the clubface. Finally, many Callaway Golf irons offer a 360-Degree Undercut Channel, which maximizes perimeter weighting by moving the center of gravity lower and farther back in the clubhead, enlarging the hitting area and stabilizing the clubhead for more forgiveness.
This particular Big Bertha 08 iron--the sand wedge--is designed for short distances, with a 55-degree loft, a length of 35.25 inches, and a swing weight of D3.
